UrbanEye Film Festival 2022

Festivalul de Film UrbanEye 2022 va avea loc între 9 – 13 noiembrie, la Cinema Elvire Popesco.

Dacă orașele și mediul în care trăim au fost întotdeauna în schimbare, viteza cu care se întâmplă acum este fără precedent.

Ca o reflecție asupra a ceea ce se întâmplă, dar și un apel la acțiune, tema pe care am ales-o pentru ediția din acest an este ”Transform”. Chestionăm ale cui sunt orașele și cine mai poate locui în ele și îți propunem filme care investighează transformările generate de gentrificare, turism sau migrație.

Alte secțiuni din festival au în centru nevoia de conservare a patrimoniului arhitectural recent, portrete de arhitecți și artiști, iar o secțiune specială este dedicată filmelor de arhivă despre București.

Pe lângă filmele prezentate în festival, UrbanEye propune anul acesta câteva tururi ghidate ale unor clădiri de patrimoniu ce nu se află în mod curent în circuitul cultural al Bucureștiului, precum și evenimente pentru copii și tineri: ateliere de explorare urbană prin film, ateliere de film pentru liceeni și un spectacol pentru copii.

”Best in the World” provides a revealing look beyond the photogenic image of Copenhagen. The Danish capital is often considered one of the most liveable, inclusive and creative cities in the world. But this was not always the case. Thirty years ago, Copenhagen was an industrial city on the brink of bankruptcy. Through political and architectural engineering the city has experienced a complete transformation, but at what cost? Today the city is an engine of inequality both within its own borders and in the surrounding countryside. Who ultimately gets to benefit from this desirable new city?

Taming the Garden (2021, 92 min., Switzerland & Germany & Georgia, D: Salome Jashi)

An influential man, former Prime Minister of Georgia, has a special kind of hobby. He buys and collects ancient trees and plants them on the coastline, in his private garden and some of them reach as high as a 16-story building. Needless to say, the complexity involved by the process of uprooting and transporting them is only matched by their magnificence: other trees need to be cut down, electrical cables need to be moved, and new pathways need to be created through the tangerine orchards.

Through exploring man’s relationship with the environment and that of a community with such a tree which marks its existence and which, at some point, disappears, the film approaches the ethics of environmental protection in a subtle manner, without excesses and ostentatiousness, even though uprooting, a theme we have become accustomed to metaphorically, takes an oppressive and tangible form. The rhythm of the action is in perfect accord with that of nature: dignified, calm and measured, since control doesn’t lie in the hands of the many anyway. This is at the same time a poetical and political film, one with a powerful discourse, which examines a multitude of social-political and psychological layers, all the while preserving a meditative atmosphere, which is probably the most conducive for living the experience of nature. Povestea lui Babar este a micului elefant care, forțat de împrejurări, ajunge în oraș. Aici se descoperă pe sine, descoperă bucuriile vieții, revenind apoi în locul copilăriei sale cu un bagaj bogat de experiențe și cunoștințe.

Tourism halted with the March 2020 lockdown and its problems suddenly disappeared. But for how long? Sociologist Giovanni Semi and other experts of the Responsible Tourism Movement talk about the effects the lockdown had and help us understand the outcomes.

The New Bauhaus (2018, 89 min., SUA, D: Alysa Nahmias)

An odyssey through the life and legacy of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, the innovative artist and educator whose pioneering approach to integrating technology into design continues to influence and inspire.

In the 1920s, rising artist László Moholy-Nagy taught at the revolutionary Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany, alongside luminaries like Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Marcel Breuer. An upstart within this esteemed group, Moholy established himself as a visionary, and the approach he developed while teaching became the ethos of his work: training artists to live “happier lives in modernity.”

Objects that are now ubiquitous in our culture, such as the Dove soap bar, the Honey Bear, and the cover of the first issue of Playboy magazine were designed by students and alumni of The New Bauhaus. Graduates of the Institute of Design became renowned fine art photographers and pioneers of digital design in the internet’s early days.

Under Tomorrow’s Sky (2021, 52 min., The Netherlands, D: Jan Louter)

The global population is set to rise by billions in the coming decades, with the majority of these new earthlings living in cities. A different architecture will be required to keep future urban living pleasant and healthy, says Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV, a globally operating firm of architects. Instead of uniform tower blocks, he argues in favour of ‘high rises on a human scale’, stacked structural volumes with open spaces and greenery around them that feel like vertical villages.
MVRDV has simultaneously hundreds of projects. We see Maas working as foreman of his 280 employees, teaching at the university in Delft, commuting between continents and inspiring innovative research. Sometimes he is frustrated, seldom angry or tired and he never loses faith in the future he is co-shaping.

Former lead architect OMA Floris Alkemade interrupted his upward career to represent his innovative ideas at the decision-making level as Chief Government Architect of the Netherlands. The independent filmmaker André de Laat accompanied him behind the scenes for three years. He followed him to attics, cellars and construction sites where accidental encounters and unexpected situations offered chances for action many times. What kind of architectural and territorial development issues needs a country with one of the most advanced environmental cultures face? What role can the public sector play in fostering architectural and urban innovation? Portrait, manifesto, and an inspiring mosaic of ideas, reasons, opinions and plans.
