- jazzunit presents: Doing it for Dilla
- Warm-up set: DJ Zsoxee
- After concert: Jam Session hosted by 7th SENSE
James Dewitt Yancey – known as J Dilla or Jay Dee – was an American record producer and rapper born and raised in Detroit, former member and producer of Slum Village rap group. He was one of the industry’s most influential hip hop artist whose music formed the backdrop to songs by artists, including Common, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, The Roots, Bilal, Madlib and many others.
Known for juicy beats and laid back grooves, he managed to “humanize” his drum machine and treat it like an instrument. Working in his basement, he had down there over a thousand vinyl records which he used for his samples besides different keyboards, bass, guitar or drums. He released his “magnus opus” record called “Donuts” on the 7th of February in 2006 on his 32nd birthday, just three days before passing away – he was suffering of a rare blood disease. Since then, February is considered Dilla Month among hip-hop circles – a lots of events are happening all over the world during this month, dedicated to Jay Dee.

jazzunit. is a night celebrating unity and togetherness alongside Bucharest’s finest jazz musicians and beyond. Put your dancing shoes on and warm yourself up, alongside our DJ, with a well sought selection of the hottest jazz, dance, soul and house records. Every night will feature a concert of emerging, fresh bands from the local jazz scene, which later on will be followed by a jam session of improvised groove music. A blend of Jazz, Afrobeat, Soul, Electronic, Hip-Hop and more. A short set will be performed by our house band, 7th SENSE, and the rest of the night will see the stage open to passion driven artists.
Zsoxee, aka Zsolt Argyelan, is a jazz trumpet player, composer, producer, and DJ.
Listening to the resonances of other dimensions, wandering through his terraces of consciousness, he synchronizes jazzy music directions on a universal astral panel in which everything known ceases to exist and the impossible is realized. With a specific combination of different frequencies and colorful rhythms, he manages to activate an astral portal that launches him and his audience into a transcendental state of mind and body with consequent catharsis. In other words, danceable grooves are guaranteed.
For this special night, obviously, he prepared some Dilla specials for the menu.
7th SENSE is one of the youngest and most appreciated jazz bands from Romania, achieving to build in the last three years a solid image around the local and national jazz scene. They combine fresh jazz compositions with groove driven music and improvisation, all of which can be heard on their debut album ‘Light in Chaos’, which was released last June. The journey they’ve been on has thought them that no matter how hard times can get, there is always a light we can cling onto in the chaos that is surrounding us. Thus, the wish to bring a ray of hope and convey this message with the audience has become an important part of their music and identity as a band. You will be drawn in to hop along their journey, discovering a multitude of influences ranging from soul, nu-jazz to electronic and world music.
