Cinema Esperanto is a series exploring multilingualism, cultural diversity, and cinematic perspectives through film screenings presented at Control Club with support from cultural institutes.
This edition brings Cold War (Zimna wojna) on the screen in Control with the support of the Polish Institute in Bucharest.

Shot in black and white, Cold War stands out through the outstanding performances of some of Poland’s most acclaimed actors, including Tomasz Kot, Joanna Kulig and Agata Kulesza, as well as its remarkable music composed by Polish musician Marcin Masecki.
Synopsis
Set against the backdrop of the Cold War in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and 1950s Paris, on both sides of the Iron Curtain, the film tells a love story as impossible as the times its protagonists live by.
Wiktor – a talented musician and intellectual with strong Western ideals – and Zula – a young village girl with an extraordinary voice – meet during auditions for the Mazurek folk song and dance ensemble. Wiktor immediately recognizes her spark and offers her the opportunity to pursue a musical career. They fall deeply in love, despite everything standing in their way: their conflicting personalities, different ambitions and political beliefs, and the cruel twists of fate.
Blending jazz with traditional Polish folk music, Cold War follows their passionate and turbulent relationship over fifteen years, between 1949 and 1964.

Widely regarded as the Best European Film of 2018, Cold War won the Best Director Award for Paweł Pawlikowski at the Cannes Film Festival and was selected as Poland’s official submission for the Academy Awards (OSCAR) in the Best Foreign Language Film category (now Best International Feature Film).
At the 2019 Academy Awards (OSCAR), Cold War received three nominations:

Cold War (2018) was distributed in Romanian cinemas by Independența Film.
